Uproarious scenes at Nagercoil council meet

By Our Staff Reporter

NAGERCOIL, MARCH 25 . A special meeting of the Nagercoil Municipal Council witnessed uproarious scenes yesterday over the issue of annual contracts pertaining to the tender for the sale of fish in the Vadaserry fish market and for the upkeep of two public toilets in Anna Stadium and Sir. C. P. Ramasamy Park.

Almost all councillors cutting across partylines demanded fresh tenders for the fish sale contract in the fish market, claiming that the municipality would have to incur loss to the tune of Rs.4.51 lakhs. Last year, the tender was awarded to the contractor who paid Rs.7.15 lakhs. But this year, the municipality has awarded tender to another contractor, who had quoted just Rs. 3 lakhs.

When the meeting took up the issue of contracts, the vice-chairman, R. M. Murugan, BJP councillors Jeyakannan, and Gandhi Arunachalam, Congress member Chidambaram and DMK member Ramakrishnan trooped to the well of the House and demanded that the chairperson, Meena Dev, cancel the tender and call for fresh ones.

The councillors also demanded that the public auctions previously held to award contract for the public toilets in C. P. Ramasamy Park and Anna Stadium, should be declared null and void, and fresh tenders be called, since all these contracts would not fetch any revenue to this municipality.

The Commissioner of Municipal Administration said that the local body could scrap the earlier resolution passed by it, awarding the contract to Mariadas, and allow members to discuss the possibility of calling for fresh tenders.

The chairperson told the pressperson that the resolutions were passed in the council with a majority vote.

Of the 51 councillors, only nine had sought fresh tenders. She also said that Rs.5 crores would be utilised for the renovation of the Vadaserry bus stand.
