TIRUCHI, MARCH 25 . The district administration has submitted proposals worth Rs.two crores to the State Government for the supply of drinking water in the villages expected to face an acute scarcity in the ensuing summer, the Collector, V. Pandian said. Speaking at a mass contact programme at Amoor near Musiri on Wednesday, Mr. Pandian called upon the people residing in the panchayats to remit water tax and house tax with immediate effect so that more development works could be implemented. Referring to the ongoing development programmes, the Collector said that about 5,215 works launched on an outlay of Rs.38.59 crores were under various stages. The villagers should gain first-hand information about these works and extend a helping hand for the successful completion of the works as per schedule. Under the `Namathu Gramam' scheme, works on laying of tar roads on an outlay of Rs.one lakh each and installation of street lights at a cost of Rs.10,000 each have been undertaken in all 408 panchayats in the district. He also called upon the people to send illiterate boys and girls below 14 years to schools to enable the district to achieve cent per cent literacy rate. The Collector distributed assistance under various government schemes to 89 beneficiaries belonging to weaker sections, including coconut saplings to three girls. He announced the decisions taken on the 64 petitions presented by the local people in connection with the mass contact programme. The people presented 209 petitions afresh and the Collector directed the officials to take immediate action on them. Mr. Pandian later conducted surprise check in the fair price shop and the noon-meal centre in the village.
