Siemens Medical to invest in remote services

By P. Vikram Reddy

HYDERABAD, MARCH 26. Siemens Medical Solutions plans to bring to India some of the latest range of ultra sound products by June-July. Simultaneously, it plans to launch Gamma cameras (combined by CT) under the brand name `symbia'.

Speaking to The Hindu here on Saturday, Henrich von Wulfen, President, Asia Pacific, and D. Raghavan, Executive Vice-President, said these were the latest offerings which were now being launched globally. The company is investing in `Siemens Remote Services (SRS)', and expects to link up 200 systems such as CT scanners, MRIs, Cathlabs and ultrasonic equipment. This would include existing installations and new ones.

They said 25 per cent of the existing facilities would be linked in the project which ends in March 2006. Already 70 existing equipment in India have been linked up.

The Siemens Remote Services links sophisticated equipment (through broadband connectivity) to the server in Singapore, facilitating `remote diagnosis' of problems in equipment. Most software problems could thus be addressed `remotely' and ultimately improve quality of services dramatically, they said explaining the advantages. It has 500 CT scanners, 200 MRIs, 200 Cathlabs, 10,000 X-ray machines, and 3,000 ultra sonic equipment installed in India. While the Indian healthcare market is growing at 13-14 per cent, Siemens was growing at 22 per cent over the past four years. "We are a vehicle of really innovative products, and usually launch products in India, within 3-4 months of global launch," Mr. Wulfen said. With a turnover of Rs. 500 crores in India, Siemens has a market share of 33 per cent in X-ray products. It has a manufacturing plant in Goa for X-ray machines, while the other equipment is imported. From its Goa facility, it started exports to China, Thailand , Malaysia, South America and Europe, and expects to touch Rs. 15 crores this year (September), they said.
