`Briyani merchant' held

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 26. A man who posed as a `briyani' merchant and rented utensils from various shops in North Chennai was arrested by the police.

According to Flower Bazaar police, A. Nawaz, a resident of Srinivasapillai Street in George Town, used to pose as a cook who undertook bulk orders for marriages and functions. He rented utensils from various shops in Royapuram, Washermanpet, North Beach and Seven Wells and sold them in second-hand markets. He used to pay a portion of the money to the shops that lent him the utensils to keep them from suspecting him.

He recently absconded and the utensil dealers filed a complaint with the police. A special team was set up by Flower Bazaar police. Nawaz was arrested earlier today and utensils worth Rs. four lakhs recovered. Charges have been filed for criminal breach of trust.
