Junior research fellow needed

KOZHIKODE MARCH 26. A junior research fellow is needed for a research project in the Civil Engineering Department at the National Institute of Technology, Calicut. Workshop on Kathakali

A 20-day Kathakali `sibiram' (workshop) will be organised by the Kathakali Vidyalayam run by Chemancheri Kunhiraman Nair at Cheliya in Koilandi from April 17. The workshop organised with cooperation of the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi is intended to impart intensive training in Kathakali `vesham,' `chenda,' `maddalam,' music and `chutti' for select students in Gurukula style under the guidance of famous gurus. The applicants should be aged 10 to 25. Those interested should apply in a plain paper, stating their names, addresses, dates of birth, subjects for training and former experience to the secretary, Kathakali Vidyalayam, Cheliya PO, Koilandi, Kozhikode district-673 306 before April 10. Campaign launched

KOLLAM March 26. The district unit of the Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithy has launched a campaign for making the three-day traders hartal from March 30 a success. The hartal has been called in protest against the implementation of Value Added Tax (VAT) from April 1. The campaign is also for enlisting maximum representation from Kollam for the April 1 dharna by the Samithy in front of the State Secretariat. The district president of the Samithy, A. Abdul Rahim, inaugurated the campaign.

Anniversary celebrations

PATHANAMTHITTA MARCH 26. The Viswa Hindu Parishad national vice-president, P. Ramachandran, will inaugurate the 196th anniversary celebrations of the martyrdom of Veluthampi Dalawa at Mannady, near Adoor, on March 29 afternoon. J. Nandakumar will deliver the keynote address at a function to be presided over by Sasidharan Nair. P.M. Velayudhan, K.R. Kannan and V.R. Rajashekharan will also address the meeting.

Security at Chief Minister's house to be beefed up

CUDDAPAH: Security arrangements at the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's residence at Pulivendula, are to be beefed up in a couple of days. Posting of sentries, regulating traffic and parking on the road, increased vigil and other security arrangements are being planned. Police officials inspected the Chief Minister's residence at Pulivendula on Friday night and reviewed the security arrangements. The Reserve Inspector, Muralidhar, Pulivendula CI, Rajeswara Reddy and staff inspected the situation as part of a routine fortnightly review of VIP security arrangements, the Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, said on Saturday.

Change in flight timings

VISAKHAPATNAM: Air Deccan has effected some changes in its Visakhapatnam-Hyderabad flight timings from March 28. A link service has also been provided to Bangalore. The flight leaves Hyderabad at 8.05 a.m. and arrives here at 9.35 a.m. It leaves here at 10 a.m. and reaches Hyderabad at 11.30 a.m. This schedule will be in operation till October 31. The Visakha-Hyderabad flight has been linked to the Hyderabad-Bangalore flight following the changes in the flight schedule. Tickets to Bangalore will be sold from here also, according to the commercial manager of Air Deccan, K. Srinivasa Reddy.

Record collections at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: The sacred hundi in the Lord Venkateswara temple netted a record income of Rs.1.17 crores in a single day on Saturday. The temple authorities attributed the huge income to the unprecedented crowd that has been visiting the temple town since Friday. The hundi income, which had crossed the Rs. one-crore mark a couple of times earlier, always had at least a single major offering by an individual, every time it crossed the figure. This is perhaps the first time that the hundi income crossed the magic figure without any single major offering.

Farmer commits suicide

KARIMNAGAR: A farmer committed suicide by hanging himself in a shed near his fields in Venkataraopeta village of Mallapur mandal on Friday night. Reports said the farmer, N. Venkanna (48), cultivated paddy and maize in his two acres of land and incurred debts to the tune of Rs. 1 lakh. Due to failure of crops and unable to clear the debts, he resorted to suicide. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Landlord hacked to death

Kakinada: A landlord of Pedamulakanagadda village, Garapati Prakasarao (55), has been killed allegedly by a group of workers of the Rythu Coolie Sangham of the CPI(ML) New Democracy following a land dispute. According to the Addateegala police a group of nine persons armed with hunting knives and axes attacked the landlord on the outskirts of the village killing him on the spot on Friday night. The body was found in the bushes on Saturday.

Farm worker found dead

Kakinada: Muppidi Venkata Gadireddi (20) a farm worker engaged in pesticide spraying operations was found dead in the fields of Narsingapuram village of Pithapuram mandal on Saturday. It is believed he had inhaled poisonous fumes emanating from the pesticides while spraying them. The Pithapuram police have registered a case.

Express runs over gangman

CUDDAPAH: A railway gangman, Gurramkonda Subbanna (55), was fatally run over by the Inter-City express at Cuddapah railway station on Saturday. Subbanna of Yerramukkapalle was crossing a railway track, when the Inter-City Express, which came on to an adjoining track hit him, resulting in his instantaneous death. Railway police registered a case and shifted the body to Cuddapah Government hospital for post-mortem.

Woman, baby run over

KHAMMAM: A woman and her four-month-old child were fatally knocked down by a goods train near the Venkatagiri gate in the town on Saturday. The police said the 25-year-old woman who was crossing the track with the baby in her arms was hit by the goods train bound for Secunderabad. The bodies, shifted to the mortuary for post mortem, are yet to be identified. The railway police are investigating.

Mystery shrouds youths' death

Kakinada: Mystery shrouds the death of a teenaged girl and a 24-year-old youth, whose bodies were retrieved from the Parra Canal bed in Suryaraopet area on the city outskirts on Friday. A `mangalsutra' was found on the girl. A brandy bottle, a cool drink bottle and a pesticide tin were found next to the bodies but no clue was available to establish the couple's identity. The Sub-Inspector of Thimmapuram police station, Ch. Ramarao, said the bodies were kept in the mortuary at the Government General Hospital and post mortem would be conducted on Monday.

International call racket busted

HYDERABAD: Sleuths of the North Zone Task Force team on Friday raided `Reddy Communications' at Prakash Nagar, Begumpet, here and arrested its owner who was reportedly misusing telephone lines for illegal routing of international calls. The police seized seven telephones, two routers and related material. The accused, G. Surya Prakash Reddy, was allegedly misusing telephone lines provided by Tata Tele Services and telephones provided by Reliance Infocom and illegally routing calls from here to other countries like the US.

Sangham office-bearer arrested?

GUNTUR: Some unidentified persons allegedly picked up Anjamma widow of Boppuri Lakshmaiah, the Guntur district AIPRF treasurer, on Friday night from her house in Ganapavaram, 3 km. from Chilakaluripet in Guntur district. Lakshmaiah was killed in an encounter in May 2004 and since then Anjamma has been staying with her mother and two children at Ganapavaram.

The Amarula Bandhumitrula Sangham along with AIPRF, APCLC and Virasam, organised a meeting in Guntur on Saturday and accused the police of taking her into custody. Anjamma, Guntur unit secretary of the sangham, was allegedly picked up by policemen in mufti with weapons at 11.10 p.m. the sangham State leader, Padma Kumari, alleged.

CPI(M) to undertake padayatra

HYDERABAD: The CPI(M) MLA of Ibrahimpatnam, M. Narasimha, will lead party activists on a padayatra on Monday from Ibrahimpatan to Hyderabad (40 km) demanding implementation of a Rs. 72-crore drinking water scheme for 240 villages in the Assembly constituency,, reportedly announced by the Chief Minister during his visit to Ibrahimpatnam as part of Rajiv Palle Baata.

The padayatra will be flagged off by the Rajya Sabha member and CPI(M) State Secretariat member, P. Madu. The party State secretary, B.V. Raghavulu, and the Floor Leader in Assembly, N. Narasimhaiah, will address participants at the terminating point, Indira Park here.

Job guarantee scheme sought

Hyderabad: Frontal organisations of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) will organise a human chain and other demonstrations all over the State on Monday demanding the implementation of the employment guarantee programme promised in the Common Minimum Programme by the UPA Government.
