Minority B.Ed colleges: Tamil students feel let down

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, MARCH 26. The State Government has accorded minority institution status to 109 colleges of education on religious grounds but has denied the same to the Tamil linguistic minority.

There are 64 Tamil primary schools and seven upper primary schools in Chittoor district alone. The number of high schools imparting schooling in Tamil medium is 17 in the same district. Since long the Tamil population has been seeking minority status based on linguistic consideration for a B.Ed. college in Chittoor district to serve its needs. The absence of such a facility is depriving Tamil medium students any opportunity to secure employment as school assistants. They can only seek entry into DIET (diploma in education and training) at Karvetinagar which has earmarked 50 seats for Tamil language students. But that caters to the needs of special grade teachers alone.
