Bijapur
By Our Staff Correspondent
BIJAPUR, MARCH 26. The traditional festival of colours, Holi, had a colourful start in city and elsewhere in Bijapur and Bagalkot districts. However, a minor incident of trouble unfolded in Lokapur town in Mudhol taluk on Saturday. Timely intervention by the police averted a major clash between supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in Lokapur. A few youths from the BJP tried to pull down the "mosaru-gadige" (pot filled with curd), which was tied at a height, by forming a pyramid. Another group of people reportedly affiliated with the Congress, who were taking the effigy of Kaama in a procession, engaged in verbal duel with the BJP supporters. Police reportedly resorted to mild lathi charge to bring the situation under control. While "Kaama dahana" was performed on Friday night, the streets were full of colour on Saturday. Youth and children went from street to street with "pichkaris" and colour in their hand. In Bagalkot town, where Holi is celebrated with much pomp every year, the MP P.C. Gaddigoudar formally inaugurated the festival by beating the "halige", a plate-shaped drum. Recalling the history of Holi in Bagalkot town, he lauded the contribution of the late Jyothiprakash Salunke in popularising the festival in the town. The president of the municipal council, Parushram Patroti; minority community leader, Allabaksh Bagewadi; Holi celebration committee members, Shrimanth Basavaprabhu Saranadagouda, Srinivas Ballari, Basavaraj Siddalingappanavar, Ghanashyam Bandage, and Narayan Desai, took active part in Holi celebrations.
