HAVERI, MARCH 26. Handiganur was an obscure village, north of the Varada in Haveri taluk, till the popular Kannada serial, Moodalamane, hit the small screen. The village and the landlord's mansion, called "wade" locally, form the backdrop of the story. The plot is set in rural surroundings typical of north Karnataka, in terms of dialect, mannerisms of the characters and style of dressing. People in the vicinity have been making a beeline to see the location and watch the shooting of the serial. The television crew and cast have set up base at Hosaritti, 20 km from Haveri. The "aradhana" of Dhirendra Swami, a saint from the lineage of Saint Raghavendra Swami, was held on the southern banks of the Varada in Hosaritti village for three days from Tuesday, bringing with it hordes of devout Madhwas. A few women who visited Handiganur on Wednesday after the "aradhana" at Hosaritti were able to meet the actors of the serial. Vijaya Yakkundi, who plays the role of Sushila, the wife of the Deshmukh, was at the sets. She plays the role of an orthodox housewife in an undivided Hindu family and looked younger than the character she portrays on screen. The conversation focussed on her role and dialogues in the film and Ms. Yakkundi spoke of how viewers' interpretations have compelled her to use certain expressions. Also at the sets was Yamuna Murthy, a former producer of plays for All India Radio, Dharwad. She plays the role of Yamunavva, a scheming mother-in-law of the second son of the family. "Why is this ajji wearing a churidar instead of a sari," a perplexed young visitor, Harini, asked when she saw Ms. Murthy. The women searched out other familiar characters of the serial and interacted with the stage artist, Renukavva Murgod, who plays a brahmin widow. The disappointment of not being able to meet the other actors did not dent the visitors' enthusiasm.
