VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 26. Speakers at a workshop for women journalists of north Andhra exuded confidence that given an opportunity, women can excel in journalism, as was the case in all other fields. Inaugurating the workshop organised by the Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ) here on Saturday, the Mayor, Rajana Ramani, said the workshop was held at an appropriate time with increasing number of women journalists in the profession and many of them making a mark, particularly in the electronic media. Politics and journalism were male-dominated areas and the situation was difficult for women, she observed. In this context, she described Mahatma Gandhi as the pioneer of women's liberation movement in the country with the Salt Satyagraha, as salt was something a housewife was concerned about. She urged women journalists to prove themselves in the competitive world, as media had become a big industry of late.
Problems at work
The convener of the APUWJ women's wing, K. Manjari, who explained the aim of the workshop, spoke on sexual harassment of women at the work spot, from which women journalists too were not spared.
