Businessman hacked to death

BANGALORE, MARCH 26. A businessman was hacked to death by a five-member gang on the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) yard in RMC Yard Police Station limits on Friday night.

The victim has been identified as Manjunath (37), a resident of MEI Layout in Bagalagunte.

He owned a transport company and was also a moneylender, the police said.

Around 8.30 p.m., Manjunath left the shop of his friend, Prasanna Kumar, on 6th Cross, APMC Yard.

After he had gone some 200 metres, one of the tyres of his van got punctured. He returned to Kumar's shop and took the latter's car driver, Lakshmirangaiah, with him to replace the wheel.

As Lakshmirangaiah was removing the wheel, five men reportedly attacked Manjunath with swords and machetes. As Lakshmirangaiah raised an alarm, they ran away leaving Manjunath bleeding. He was rushed to hospital, where he was declared brought dead, the police said.

Three gold chains, two rings and a bracelet Manjunath was wearing and two mobile phones and cash in his pockets were intact. The police suspect a financial dispute or business rivalry to have led to the murder. The RMC Yard police have registered a case.

Chains snatched

Two women were robbed of their gold chains in separate incidents reported from Vijayanagar and Nandini Layout police station limits on Friday night.

The police said that around 7.30 p.m., two youths, who came on a motorcycle, snatched a gold chain worth Rs. 15,000 from Shyamala when she was going from her house in RBI quarters to her friend's house in BDA Quarters in Nandini Layout.

In the other incident, around 8.15 p.m., two men who came on a motorcycle snatched a gold chain worth Rs. 30,000 from Sri Vani at Vyalikaval Layout in Vijayanagar Police Station limits, the police said.

The Nandini Layout and Vijayanagar police have registered cases.

Theft

A man reportedly put a stick through an open window and made away with trousers and a vanity bag from the house of Narasimhaiah on 7th Cross, 4th Main, AGES Layout in Sanjaynagar Police Station limits on Friday night. There was Rs. 1,000 in the trouser pocket, the police said.

Stabbed

A man who reportedly intervened in a quarrel between two persons was stabbed in the abdomen at V. Nagenahalli in Hebbal Police Station limits in the early hours of Saturday.

The police said that around 1.30 a.m., Murali tried to pacify Sudhama Pandey and Pillappa who were quarrelling.

Pandey allegedly hit Murali on the head with a club and stabbed him. Murali has been hospitalised. Following the attack on Murali, residents of the area reportedly assaulted Pandey, the police said.

The Hebbal police have registered a case.

Raid

Central Crime Branch officials on Friday raided a lodge in Ulsoor Gate Police Station limits and arrested nine people on the charge of gambling. The police seized a stake money of Rs. 3.50 lakhs.

Arrested

The Ulsoor police have arrested a woman on the charge of stealing gold ornaments and cash from a police official's house in the police quarters on Ramakrishna Mutt Road.

The police identified the arrested as Valli (18) of Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu. She was working as a maid at the official's house.

The police have recovered from her gold ornaments valued at Rs. 45,000 and Rs. 1,100 in cash.

Seized

Sleuths of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the Forest Cell have seized a tiger skin measuring 10 ft X 4 ft valued at Rs. 2 lakhs near Hunsur in Msyore district.

A statement issued by the CID here today said its officials acted on a tip off on Thursday and seized the skin from Thimmaiah (45) of Sulgodu village in Virajpet taluk and Ganesh (55) of Alagere village near Hunsur. They have been arrested.

A criminal case has been registered against the two, the statement added.
