Parties unite to oppose JIPMER autonomy

PONDICHERRY MARCH 27. Representatives of political parties and members of the government employees associations today adopted a resolution opposing the Centre's move to grant autonomous status to JIPMER.

A meeting convened by Pondicherry State unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) and attended by the Pondicherry State units of the Communist Party of India, the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the CPI (Marxist-Leninist), the Revolutionary Socialist Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the New Justice party, the Lok Jana Sakthi, the Dalit Panthers of India, the Janata Party and the Jananayaga Murpokku Kazhagam criticised the government's move.

Representatives of the Confederation of Associations of State Government Employees and the JIPMER Anti-Conversion Action committee (formed by staff and workers of JIPMER) also registered their protest against the move.

The delegates will meet again on March 29 to chalk out plans to intensify the protest, according the president of the Pondicherry unit of Janata Dal (S), E. Ganesan.
