State medical councils to form federation

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE, MARCH 27. A proposal to form a Federation of State Medical Councils to discuss issues of mutual interest on a common platform was mooted at a meeting of the various State councils here on Sunday.

The meet, held at the Karnataka Medical Council here, saw participation by presidents and representatives from 21 State medical councils across India. Five State medical council members — Kerala, Karnataka, Delhi, West Bengal and Punjab — will draft details of the proposal regarding the federation, Chikkananjappa, President of the Karnataka Medical Council, said.

The meeting resolved to oppose the Medical Council of India's move to direct all State councils to collect an additional fee of Rs. 500 while registering doctors, over and above the Rs. 1,000, which is being collected from doctors for registration purposes.

Inspection

It was suggested that the Medical Council of India should consult the State medical councils in the particular State while inspecting medical colleges for granting them permission and while framing policies on medical education. "With the increasing number of medical colleges, we feel that details about new colleges should furnished to the State councils, as we know better about the State and the medical education here," Dr. Chikkananjappa said.

Anti-Quackery Bill

A resolution to pressure State Governments to formulate the Anti-Quackery Bill to do away with the menace of quacks was also passed.

The participants expressed concern over multiple registration by medical doctors in different State medical councils.

It was decided, however, that a doctor practising in various States would be allowed to register in those States, on condition that if he/she is penalised by a State council, such details should be furnished to the other councils where the doctor has registered.
