Tirupati
By Our Staff Reporter
TIRUPATI, MARCH 27. A political party exclusively for the Backward Classes is the only elixir to overcome all the ailments plaguing the communities oppressed for centuries by the upper castes, R. Krishnaiah, State president of Backward Classes Welfare Association, said here on Sunday. Addressing a huge gathering at the eighth State conference of Andhra Pradesh State BC/OBC Employees Welfare Association, he criticised all the major political parties for using BCs as a weapon during elections and ignoring them subsequently after coming to power. He also appealed to the members of the community to shed the mindset of perennially toiling for the welfare of the upper caste parties and think of floating a political party "to serve our own interests".
Need for unity
Mr. Krishnaiah regretted that in spite of the agitations staged in front of the Legislative Assembly and even Parliament, the political parties were still taking them lightly and it was time for them to launch a nationwide stir to show their might. "With 94 castes under the BC category in the country, our population is really sizeable enough to wrest political power and the need of the hour is unity among ourselves" he said. The former Telugu Desam MP, Lal Jan Basha, pointed to the need for the BCs and minorities to join hands to form a solid group that could work collectively. The chairperson of Chittoor Zilla Parishad, M. Reddemma, explained how BC women were being harassed in the political arena and in the employment sector as well. The Tirupati MLA, M. Venkataramana, while regretting that BCs were shown an empty hand after being placated during elections, expressed the hope that the Congress Government would provide loans to BC women at a lower rate of interest.
Book released
`Kulageetha', a book written by Nagamma Phule, Deputy Collector, Kurnool, was released by Mr. Krishnaiah and Mr. Basha on the occasion. The former Director-General of Police (Karnataka), Srinivasulu, the ZP Chairperson, Anantapur, Thippe Swamy, and the former MP, Anantapur, K. Srinivasulu, were among the other speakers. Earlier, a huge rally was organised in the town.
