Orissa's objection

to project

Sir,_This has reference to a recent news item in The Hindu that the Orissa Government has plans to approach the Centre on use of Vamsadhara water.

Orissa State is neither utilising the waters of Vamsadhara and Jhanjhavati nor allowing Andhra Pradesh to use them.

During 1950s, Orissa Government was reluctant to construct a dam at Gudari in Orissa because it would submerge the forest and damage the ecology.

Now an open head channel is taken up at Katragedda village in Andhra Pradesh. Open head channel neither causes any submersion nor plunders the share of waters of Orissa. Only flood waters flow through the channel.

In fact, Orissa Government can offer the olive branch with a helping hand to jointly harness about 45tmcft of waters of Vamsadhara otherwise going waste into the sea.

Delay in disposal of cases

Sir,_The city Police Commissioner, V.S.K. Kaumudi, is said to have appealed to the District Consumer Forum to minimise issue of non-bailable warrants (NBWs) and thereby reduce delay in disposal of cases. I am reminded of an incident in the 1960s when a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court was in the city. A visit to the Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. (HSL) was listed in his engagements on the day. The Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of HSL who was from the Indian Navy, who was finding that the cases of HSL were delayed in courts, broached the matter with HSL's legal advisor, Vijjarapu Anatha Rao.

The latter said with a smile that it might border on contempt of court and both smiled away the issue over a cup of tea.

Poor telephone services

Sir,_There are about 1.5 lakh telephone connections in Vizianagaram town, half of which have some problem or other everyday.

After a complaint, the department takes a few hours to carry out corrective action. If an automatic rectification of technical defects is adopted and unit defect is also attended to by immediate response, it will be highly helpful to the subscribers.

John Major's visit

Sir,_ The Hindu has to be congratulated for its Reporter's Diary item covering the visit of John Major, former British Prime Minister, to Visakhapatnam. Major's expression, "Our habits are still continuing here though we have given them up in our country," should be an eye-opener to our bosses and hero-worshippers.

Speed-breakers needed

Sir,_ Car Shed Junction near Madhurawada is a traffic generation point. Heavy vehicles are moving at high speed on the National Highway No. 5 at this junction resulting in accidents with alarming regularity. I request the NHAI to provide speed-breakers at this junction immediately to prevent accidents.
