Kendriya Vidyalaya to come up in Tuticorin

By Our Staff Reporter

TUTICORIN, MARCH 27 . Bhartendra Singh Paswan, Secretary (Secondary and Higher Education), Government of India, today held a discussion with the chairman, Tuticorin Port Trust, N.K. Raghupathy, to explore possibilities of setting up a Kendriya Vidyalaya within the jurisdiction of the port.

Official sources told The Hindu that the union secretary had asked the port authorities to provide the necessary 10 hectares of land for the purpose.

The TPT chairman had assured Mr. Paswan that the port will consider the proposal in consultation with the Customs, Coast Guard and other central government agencies situated in the port area, on sharing the costs of land, infrastructure etc, for the proposed project, among them.

The TPT sources said the Special Economic Zone, which was to come up at the port estate very soon, was one of the major factors that prompted the port to review its earlier decision of not opting for a Kendriya Vidyalaya altogether, when a similar proposal came up a few years ago.

The SEZ would bring in its wake a lot of people from different parts of the country to this region. So a Kendriya Vidyalaya would be essential for their children, who will find it difficult to adjust to the State syllabus, the reason why we decided to reappraise our earlier decision, port sources said.

Moreover, a Kendriya Vidyalaya in the region could benefit the children of Coast Guard and Customs officials too, as a good number of officials in such bodies come from other States.
