Keep spurious pesticide out: Minister

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MARCH 27. The Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy, has urged the farming community, Government departments and scientists to join hands to check the menace of spurious agricultural inputs, be it seed, fertilizer or pesticide.

At a regional conference of agriculture and allied departments on Sunday, Mr. Reddy said one-third of the pesticide sold in India was being consumed in Andhra Pradesh. The Government had been grappling with the problem since coming to power. It had ensured that at least the pesticide available was genuine.

Thrust area

It was amazing, but true, Mr. Reddy said, adding that for nearly two decades there had been no training or re-orientation for officials in the Agriculture Department. The Congress Government had identified it as a key area of focus and was making it compulsory for officials to undergo a training programme before every kharif and rabi seasons.
