MANGALORE, MARCH 27. The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) Dakshina Kannada unit has decided to take out a rally from Light House Hill Road to A.B. Shetty Circle here on Tuesday in support of its demands and to register its protest against the power policies of the State Government. According to a press release from Sunny D' Souza, general secretary of the sangha's district unit, although the Government has announced that it will waive power dues of farmers till March 31, 2003, Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) is recovering the dues. The rally will urge the Government to issue instructions to the officials concerned to waive the dues. Mr. D'Souza said farmers under the jurisdiction of MESCOM use power only for four to six months in a year. Since farmers depend heavily on rains, the Government should fix power tariff scientifically based on average power used by farmers. The rally will urge the Government to direct MESCOM authorities to provide power supply to alternative arrangements for irrigation made by farmers. This is important because the Government has not made any arrangement to provide irrigation facilities to farmers in coastal regions.
