Death traps

on roads

Sir, — Though the road works in a few localities have been completed, trenches trenches and pits in these areas are filled in a haphazard manner. In Attavar, St. Lobo Road, Falnir, and Kankanady, these pits form death traps, making the road dangerous for motorists, especially two-wheeler riders.

I urge the corporators to direct the department concerned to fill these pits and take up road repair work immediately.

Name boards at bus shelters

Sir, — The bus shelters at the entrance to the Town Hall up to the RTO office have no boards with bus routes and route numbers.

This makes it difficult for commuters who wait for buses at these shelters. I hope that the Mangalore City Corporation takes steps to put up boards in Kannada and English at all the bus shelters in the city.

Poor maintenance

Sir, — The Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL), Gulbarga, does not maintain its records properly. The officials there include the paid bill amount in the new bill, and the customer is forced to visit the KPTCL office to rectify the mistake. Even after the entire system has been computerised, such errors are repeated. I hope that the authorities concerned will look into the issue to ensure that such blunders do not recur.

Doubling rail link

Sir, — The doubling the Bangalore-Mysore rail link at a cost of Rs. 300 crores will greatly benefit passenger and freight traffic from both Bangalore and Mysore.

The doubling work that was completed up to Ramanagaram was stopped because the State Government insisted on a 50-50 sharing with the Union Railway Ministry.

The Ministry, however, insists that 60 per cent of the cost be borne by the State.

The difference amounts to Rs. 30 crores. The demand to double the line is a long-standing one. Surely, re-budgeting for Rs. 30 crores is not beyond the capacity of the officials in the Finance Ministry in the State.

The Karnataka Railway Corporation should also try to generate the amount.
