HYDERABAD, MARCH 27. Paediatric health care in the old city moved into top gear with Princess Durru Shehvar Children's and General Hospital adding an eight-bed intensive care unit and a 20-bed general ward for children. The paediatric ICU is fully air-conditioned and furnished with sophisticated life saving medical equipment. The units were inaugurated by the Additional Commissioner of Police (Coordination), A.K. Khan, and Prince Muffakham Jah Bahadur. Mr. Khan said while the city boasted of many corporate hospitals, same was not the case with the old city though medical requirement was enormous. He expressed surprise that Durru Shehvar Hospital did not enjoy any support from the Government and hoped that concessions would be extended to it.
Sorry state of affairs
He said though medicine was the noblest of professions, it was tarred by commercialisation now. He cited an incident to show as to how a hospital performed liver transplantation on a person who ultimately died of some complications. His wife who donated the liver also died. Still, the hospital collected Rs. 31 lakhs. "It is time the medical profession pondered over such issues," Mr. Khan said. Referring to a request earlier made, he said that a police sub-control would be set up near the hospital. Mahmood Bin Mohammad, trustee, Nizam Charitable Trust, and Anees Husain, chief executive officer, Shehvar hospital, spoke. Prince Muffakahm Jah later gave away prizes to winners of the `Well baby' contest.
