This Day That Age
In the Madras Council on March 26 Mr. V.V. Ramaswami asked whether the Government had any proposal to introduce Tamil as the official language and, if so, when. Mr. M. Bhaktavatsalam, Minister for Agriculture and Leader of the House, answered the question in the negative. Asked if the Government would take steps to make Tamil the official language of the Sate, the Minister said the Government were of the same view and the only matter to be decided was as to when and how it should be done. He said the subject need not be taken up as an "issue" at the moment. Mr. Salem Subramaniam asked if any assurance could be given by the Government that at least before the next general elections Tamil would be introduced as the official language. The Minister said that no time-limit could be fixed. As far as possible the Government were conducting the affairs of the State in the "mother-tongue" only and that procedure would be followed.
