CUDDAPAH, MARCH 28. The Government has sanctioned a rehabilitation centre for sex workers on a 11-acre stretch of land at Galiveedu mandal headquarters, the Superintendent of Police, V.C. Sajjanar, said. A shelter home for those liberated from the flesh trade was also mooted near Veligallu project site and the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, allotted 10 acres of land for it, he said at a counselling camp for sex workers at Poolakunta hamlet in Galiveedu mandal on Sunday night.
Alternative jobs
The rehabilitated sex workers would be trained in employment-oriented trades at the centre through the Regional Network Against Trafficking of Women, the SP said. Efforts are on to liberate 201 women of Cuddapah district, 100 of Chittoor and 120 of Anantapur district from the flesh trade and provide them alternative employment avenues under the regional network, Mr. Sajjanar said. He advised the sex workers who returned from Pune not to go back to the red light areas, but to opt for some skills offered by the Government at the rehabilitation centre. He said the people should impose social curbs to stop trafficking and promised steps to get new borewells sunk in villages from where trafficking was rampant.
Loans sought
Trafficking was rampant among the poorer sections and middle classes facing social and economic problems, said a journalist, Kareem. Some girls who returned from Pune narrated their harrowing experiences. They sought sanction of loans for self-employment, provision of drinking water and bus service to their hamlets. The regional network resource person, Sridevi, Lakkireddipalle CI, Sankarudu, SIs, Obulesu and Sharif, Velugu and ICDS officials and the Jagruthi troupe of the Police Department took part.
