Desilting hits traffic in Vellore

By Our Staff Reporter

VELLORE, MARCH 28. The traffic bottleneck on Arcot Road here has been worsened by the work on desilting drainage channels on both sides of the road, under way for the last three months.

Arcot Road, on which the century-old Christian Medical College Hospital is located, is one of the problem areas with regard to traffic administration in Vellore. The narrow road connects Vellore town with the nearby Sathuvachari Municipality, where the Collectorate is situated. It is one of the busiest roads in terms of pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The desilting, not having been done for several decades, is long overdue; but it has put road users to hardship. The work is progressing slowly due to funds shortage.

Private funding

On the request of the Collector, S. Gopalakrishnan, the CMC Hospital agreed to fund the desilting of the 600 metre-long drainage channel running alongside the hospital wall at an estimated cost of Rs. 27 lakhs. The hospital has also decided to desilt, at a cost of Rs. 3 lakhs, the channel passing through the western side of the hospital premises, which conveys the drainage water to the open channel on Katpadi Road.

The municipality's delay in desilting the channel on the southern side has led to the accumulation of more silt and garbage. Another problem that the municipality has to tackle is to open the link connecting the channels on both sides of the road and desilt it so as to ensure smooth flow of drainage water. But if this were opened, the traffic on Arcot Road would have to be closed for a few days. A positive fall-out of the desilting work is the decision of the municipality to widen the Arcot Road by about 12 feet at the same time.
