TIRUNELVELI, MARCH 28. Functionaries of Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) began a 24-hour dharna in front of `Rani Thottam,' the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation administrative office at Nagercoil, today. The protestors demanded that the wage settlement talks be started at the earliest as "the government was wantonly keeping this issue pending for long for reasons best known to the administrators." The government should give up its decision to downsize the workforce in the transport corporations and instead positive steps be taken to fill up all vacancies immediately so that the buses could be maintained and operated properly. They also pointed out that the government was only keen on preferring appeals in the higher forum of the judiciary instead of implementing an order given by a lower court in favour of the TNSTC employees. It would only be a waste of precious time, they said.
