HYDERABAD, MARCH 28. The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) has decided to ban Punjab Police player Kanwalpreet Singh for two years with immediate effect for assaulting Deepak Thakur during the Raja Ranjit Singh Memorial hockey tournament in New Delhi recently. K. Jothikumaran, Secretary General, IHF, informed that the decision was taken on the recommendation of the tournament committee. Meanwhile, the IHF Secretary who chaired a crucial meeting to take stock of the situation after the alleged assault by Gagan Ajit Singh of Punjab on IOC's Bikramjit Singh during the super league match of the 61st Senior national championship, referred the issue to the IHF President, K.P.S. Gill, to take a final decision. "We called both the players and the team officials today for the meeting. They gave their views in writing. After deliberations with the Tournament Director, Peter Menezes, and the Organising Secretary, P. Kantaiah, the matter has been referred to Mr. Gill," Mr. Jothikumaran said. He also said a final decision would be taken at the earliest. However, Jothikumaran made it clear that the IHF was not contemplating a ban on the Punjab team.
Meanwhile, Punjab captain Daljit Singh gave a written apology for the incident, in which his team-mate Gagan Ajit Singh was involved.
