AFI domestic calendar

NEW DELHI, MARCH 28. Delhi will host three top athletics events of the domestic calendar for the 2005-06 season.

The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) on Monday released the schedule of events for the coming season with an eye on next year's Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.

The domestic athletics season will extend till November instead of September to prepare the athletes for the gruelling 2006 season.

The Commonwealth Games in Melbourne is scheduled in March while the Asian Games in Doha is slated for December.

The AFI has introduced two new competitions — throws and pole vault competitions and combined events — for all age groups. In all, the AFI will conduct 22 competitions with Delhi hosting the opening National circuit meet on May 17. Delhi has also been allotted the Federation Cup championship and the sixth National circuit meet.

The schedule: Throws and pole vault competition (all groups), May 9-10, Delhi; 1st National circuit meet, May 17, Delhi; National youth (under-18) championships, May 18-20, Bangalore; 2nd National circuit meet, May 21, Patiala; 3rd National circuit meet, May 24, Ludhiana; Federation Cup championships (seniors), June 1-3, Delhi; National inter-State championships (seniors), July 3-6, Bangalore; Combined events competitions (all groups), Aug. 1-2, SAI Bangalore; 4th National circuit meet, Aug. 18, Chennai; 5th National circuit meet, Aug. 21, Bangalore; North Zone junior championships, Sept. 19-21, Chandigarh; South Zone junior championships, Sept. 19-21, Kochi; West Zone junior championship, Sept. 22-24, Bhopal; East Zone junior championship, Sept. 22-24, Gaya; 3rd National inter-district championship (sub-junior), Oct. 3-5, Kurukshetra; National inter-zonal junior championships, Oct. 17-19, Bhuvneshwar; 6th National circuit meet, Oct. 31, Delhi; Federation Cup championships (juniors), Nov 5-7, Ernakulam, National Open championships, Nov. 7-9, Hyderabad; National junior championships, Nov. 25-29, Coimbatore; National cross country championships, Feb. 5, 2006, Pune; Federation Cup National cross country championships, Feb. 26, Munnar. — Our Sports Reporter
