BANGALORE, MARCH 28. The State Wakf Board will be reconstituted in 15 days, the Animal Husbandry and Wakf Minister, Mirajuddin Patel, said in the Legislative Council today. He told Ramachandra Gowda (BJP) during Question Hour that there are some legal hurdles to overcome before the Wakf Board, which has been headless for a year and a half, can be reconstituted. He proposed to take up the issue with the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, and appoint the nominated members after which the Wakf Board will be reconstituted. He said 22 mosques that come under the Wakf Board management have reported irregularities of various kinds and administrative officer will soon be appointed to conduct an inquiry into the irregularities.
Vet varsity
Mr. Patel said a committee has been appointed to give a report on the transfer of assets from the universities of agricultural sciences to the newly established Veterinary University in Bidar. He told Sashil Namoshi (BJP) that the process of transfer of assets will be initiated soon after the report is submitted. As per the Universities Act, 21 institutions and four veterinary colleges come under the purview of the Bidar University. The Social Welfare Minister, Y. Nagappa, said the Government has allocated Rs. 50 lakhs for a scheme to fund backward class students to study abroad. This scheme already covers students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The contours of the scheme are still being drawn up and a minimum of 10 students will be extended the fellowships, he told K.B. Munivenkata Reddy (Congress).
Census
Dr. Nagappa told M.P. Nadagouda (Janata Dal-U) that Rs. 1 crore has been given to the Backward Classes Commission to take up a survey and census of those groups. The Centre has given Rs. 20 crores for the work, which will be taken up soon, the Minister said.
Probe
Dr. Nagappa told Vimala Gowda (BJP) that the Lokayukta is inquiring into a series of irregularities that had come to light in the Social Welfare Department and the Government is awaiting a report from him to initiate action against the erring officials. He said the Social Welfare Commissioner had conducted a departmental inquiry and found nothing amiss. However, the Lokayukta has asked for some files, and is examining the issue on the basis of complaints received. The Government is awaiting the report on those files to initiate action, he added.
