Energy conservation stressed

BANGALORE MARCH 28. India will not be able to meet its energy demands in two decades if it does not start conserving it now, the Chief Engineer of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., Pradeep Nettur, said today. A 6 per cent increase in India's GDP will contribute to a 9 per cent increase in energy demand, he said at a seminar on `Conservation of energy in industrial lighting,' organised by the Indian Society of Lighting Engineers. Mr. Nettur said high-end users such as industries need to stop wastage and show others the way in conservation. While the present installed capacity of electricity is 1.07 lakh MW, the required capacity in 2012 will be over 2 lakh MW, with 50 per cent usage by industries. He suggested that industries bring down their consumption through the use of energy efficient lamps, use of timers to switch on and off heavy machinery and other electrical equipment and the use of motion sensors. "These efforts will bring down energy consumption by more than 20 per cent and will also save industries a lot of money," Mr. Nettur said.
