Irrigation scheme extended

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Micro Irrigation Scheme which was hitherto implemented in 879 selected mandals has now been extended to entire State. The Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy, said this in a press release on Monday while clarifying that 50 per cent subsidy up to a limit of Rs.50,000 would be paid to each farmer. It would be 90 per cent for bio-diesel (jatropa) crops.

Adjustment of excess service tax

HYDERABAD: The Central Board of Excise and Customs has permitted service tax assesses to adjust any excess service tax, if paid, under the provisional assessment on this count on or before March 31 in April. In a press release here, the Commissioner, Central Excise and Customs, Range III, M.V.B. Rao, said a provision had been made after assesses had expressed difficulties in estimating the correct value of services likely to be provided by them up to March 31.

Books on peace talks released

HYDERABAD: The Speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy, released two books published by the Citizens' Forum for Democracy here on Monday. The books titled `Shanti Yagnam' by Pervaram Jagannadham, former Vice-Chancellor, and `Let's Protect Democracy' are compilations of articles written on creation of a non-violent society. T. Purushottam Rao, Mr. Jagannadham and P. Venkateswarlu were present. The books speak about importance of peace talks, members of the forum said.

YSR leaves for Delhi

HYDERABAD: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, left for Delhi on Monday evening to participate in the standing committee meeting of the Inter-States council on Tuesday. He will return later in the evening.

Intermediate student ends life

VIZIANAGARAM: K. Pratyusha, a junior Intermediate student of St. Joseph Junior College here, committed suicide by consuming pesticide in her native village, Kurupam, on Sunday. The Kurupam SI, Tirumala Rao, said the girl took the extreme step after her father, K. Ramesh Reddy, scolded her for not faring well in the examination.

Woman, daughter jump into well

Kakinada: A woman, Akella Sri Durga (22), along with her daughter, Aruna Kumari (3), committed suicide by jumping into a well at Mukkamala, near Amalapuram, in the wee hours of Monday. The Ambajipet police registered a case following a complaint from Durga's relatives that she was being harassed and driven to the extreme step by her husband and mother-in-law demanding additional dowry.

Scuffle over sewage proves fatal

VIZIANAGARAM: A minor scuffle over flow of sewage water in front of a house in Bandi Veedhi of Parvathipuram town led to the alleged murder of a man and severe knife injuries to his wife on Sunday night. K.C.S. Raghuveer, CI, said one Devarapalli Mohana Rao and his wife, Annapoorna, picked up an argument with Moramulla Srinu and his wife, Gowri, over letting out sewage water. Mohana Rao allegedly stabbed Gowri with a kitchen knife and when Srinu went to her rescue, he was also stabbed. The condition of Gowri was said to be critical.

Dalit attempts suicide

CUDDAPAH: A Dalit, Israel of Masapet here attempted suicide at the Collectorate on Monday. Israel doused himself in kerosene and tried to set himself ablaze when onlookers took him to the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan. When he apprised the Collector that his loan application for setting up a cobbler unit was not considered, Mr. Ranjan assured to render justice to him.

Two die of sunstroke?

KURNOOL: Two persons reportedly died of sunstroke at Gargeyapuram, near here, on Monday as the mercury soared to 40.4 degree Celsius. They were identified as Sunnibi (60) and Natarajan (38). The CPI(M) district secretary, T. Shadrak, urged the Government to sanction ex gratia amount for the deceased families.

Red sander smuggler nabbed

CUDDAPAH: Forest officials arrested a red sander smuggler, Chintamani Ramakrishna, under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act on orders from the Collector, Jayesh Ranjan. The Rajampet Divisional Forest Officer, B. Sunder, told newsmen at Rajampet on Monday that Ramakrishna was accused in three cases of red sander smuggling in the past. He was caught smuggling 4,076 kg of red sander logs worth Rs. 1.80 lakhs on July 24 last year, 817 kg worth Rs. 45,000 on July 25 last year and 1,000 kg worth Rs. 69,000 on October 26, 2004.

Southern Command meet opened

HYDERABAD: The General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, Lieutenant General B.S. Takhar, inaugurated the Southern Command Formation Commanders conference at AOC Centre, Secunderabad, on Monday. Issues related to military stations of Southern Command were discussed. Lt. Gen. Takhar presented the coveted Southern Command Sports Championship trophy to Major General Paramjit Singh, GOC of Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala, according to a press release.

Seeds corporation office-bearers

HYDERABAD: P. Chandra Sekhar Reddy is new president of the Andhra Pradesh State Seeds Development Corporation for 2004-06. The other office-bearers are: P. Nageswara Rao and B. Chandra Prakash Rao, vice-presidents, C. Anji Reddy, general secretary, J. Raju, joint secretary, and N. Narasimha, treasurer.

Buddhist Society of India State unit

P. Muneppa has been elected president of the State unit of Buddhist Society of India for 2005-06. The other office-bearers are: N.R. Dunna, A. Chenna Das, K.E. Krishna Murthy and Ananth Rao Sonkamble, vice-presidents, Narashimhulu Bhandar, general secretary, Bharath Bhushan, Sujatha Meshram, Vaidyanath Waddi and K. Vidya Sagar, joint secretaries, K.S.S. Reddy, P. Dharma Raju, V. Bala Narayana and Kousalya Bai Joghande, organising secretaries, and K.H. Patil, treasurer.

Takes over as special officer

CUDDAPAH: The Joint Collector, Kanthilal Dande, took over as special officer of Proddatur municipality on Monday with the term of the elected municipal council coming to an end. He took charge from the in charge Proddatur municipal chairman, R. Prasada Reddy, of Congress. The Commissioner of Cuddapah Municipal Corporation, S. Aleem Basha, took over as special officer of newly-formed Pulivendula municipality. The Jammalamadugu RDO, Ramachandra Reddy, took over as special officer of Jammalamadugu municipality.

Human chain

CUDDAPAH: Members of the Leftist organisations formed a human chain at Seven Roads circle here on Monday, demanding strengthening of Rural Employment Guarantee Act by plugging loopholes. Activists of the CITU, SFI, DYFI, and AIDWA , lamented that the proposed Bill failed to assure minimum wages, evolve a monitoring mechanism, restricted it to below poverty line beneficiaries and left fund mobilisation to State Governments.

Protest against

`official inaction'

CUDDAPAH: Villagers of Veerareddigaripalle in Lakkireddipalle mandal protested in front of the Rural Water Supply office at Lakkireddipalle, decrying `inaction' in fixing a motor to a new borewell. The villagers submitted representations to the mandal president and the MRO.

Council meeting

CHITTOOR: The Municipal Council meeting of Chittoor municipality was held here on Monday. The chairman, T. Chengalraya Naidu, presided over. The councillor, K. M. Kumar, alleged that the Commissioner, Rajendra Prasad, was being indifferent towards the councillors and was committing irregularities. Irked over the charge, the Commissioner decided to walkout. The councillors objected to him leaving the meeting. Finally, the Commissioner decided to stay back. The councillors spoke about the omissions and commissions in their wards.

Music concerts

NELLORE: The 40th annual `Bikshatana Purvaka' Sri Thyagaraja Smaranostavams would be celebrated at Nellore town from March 30 to April 5, at Town Hall. The main features this year are vocal concerts by Vijayalakshmi Subramanyam, T.V. Rama Prasad, B. Lalitha Madhav, R. Ganesh, mandolin concert by U. Srinivas and Harikatha ganam by Ch. Bhaskara Rao of Tenali.

Memorandum submitted

KURNOOL: The Andhra Pradesh Medical and Sales Representatives Union have urged the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to go cautiously on the amendments to the Patent Act. In a memorandum presented through the Bhadrachalam MP, M. Babu Rao, the union said because of the support received from the Indian Patent Act 1970, the pharmaceutical industry grew and exported drugs worth Rs. 8,000 crores. Any adverse decision at this stage would endanger the food security in the country.

19.60 cr. for fishermen's societies

KARIMNAGAR: The Andhra Pradesh State Fishermen's Cooperative Federation chairman, Mettu Prasad, said that the State Government had allocated Rs 19.60 crores in the budget for the development of fishermen's cooperative societies and the welfare of fishermen.

Mr Prasad, who was here to participate in the general body meeting of the district fishermen cooperative society on Monday, told newsmen that they were taking steps to sell fish in the open market as well as export it to other States. He said that they were striving to ensure that each fishermen society was allocated five ares of land. The district president, Cheti Dharmaiah, the fisheries department Assistant Director, Surya Prakash, the district fishermen cooperative society managing director, P Mahipal, and others were present.

Hostel official suspended

KARIMNAGAR: The Collector, C Parthasarathi, suspended the Mallial social welfare (boys) hostel welfare officer, B Dayanandam, on the charge of dereliction of duties and causing inconvenience to the hostel students.

In a press note here today, the Collector said that the hostel welfare officer was not residing in his place of posting and also neglecting his duties of ensuring proper water supply to the students. He had also given additional charges of Mallial hostel to the Kodimial social welfare officer, K Pochaiah.

23 students debarred

KARIMNAGAR: A total of 23 students were debarred from appearing in the SSC examinations for indulging in malpractices in various examination halls on Monday. According to an official release here today, the special flying squads conducted inspection in 44 centres and detected 23 malpractices, including 12 cases from Karimnagar town examination centre and from Kodimial, Kolanur, Kalwasrirampur, Shanigaram, Illanthakunta centres.

Book released

HYDERABAD: A book titled `Jai Andhra... Jai Telangana... sudigundamlo Andhra Pradesh (Andhra Pradesh in a whirlpool?) and written by C. Srinivas was released here on Monday.

The book was released by the Andhra Pradesh Non-Gazetted Officers Association president, B.V. Subba Rao. Congress MLA, Gade Venkata Reddy, said there was nothing sacrosanct about the report of the Girglani Committee, which went into violations in implementation of GO 610.

The function was also attended by MLAs, P. Keshav (TDP), Mandali Budha Prasad, Satyanarayana Murthy and Ramchander (all Congress) and Y. Shivaji, ex-MP.
