CHENNAI, MARCH 28 . The State Government will ensure the continuance of 49 fast track courts beyond March 31 and has allotted Rs. 5 crores for the purpose, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa told the Assembly today. "There is no need for any apprehension that the courts will be disbanded. The 49 courts will continue to function in view of the public interest." A government order was issued on March 24 to extend their tenure by a year.
Letter to Centre
Making a suo motu statement, she said the Government explained its position to the Centre in a March 18 letter. At the conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts in September last, she demanded that the tenure be extended beyond March 31 and that the Centre allot adequate funds. "We hope the Centre would accept our demand ... Even if no positive reply is received before March 31, I have issued an order that the courts would continue to work."
26, 455 cases pending
Initially, 30 courts were established in November 2001. Nineteen more were added in February-March 2002. Till January 31 this year, the courts disposed of 1,23,503 cases and 26,455 cases were pending. It was for the Centre to bear the cost of the establishment and working of these courts. It had made an allotment of Rs. 14.12 crores.
