BANGALORE, MARCH 28. The value added tax (VAT) regime from April 1 may push up costs for goods transporters. A parcel which now costs you Rs. 125 to send from Bangalore to Hubli may well cost Rs. 30 more after a few weeks. According to G.R. Shanumgappa, vice president (south zone), All-India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC), the impact on diesel prices could be as much as 24 per cent over current rates, taking into account the 50 paise additional cess a litre of diesel announced in the Union Budget. "The AIMTC, the apex organisation of cargo and passenger road transport companies in the country, has been closely following the Government's reported intention of revising the price of diesel by Rs. 2 a litre now and an additional Rs. 2 in May. VAT may further push up diesel prices by Rs. 1.85 a litre. Road transport operators are not in a position to absorb such a steep price increase,'' Mr. Shanmugappa said. Road transporters are upset that while the Railways, who also move considerable quantity of cargo, are subsidised by the Government, they have no such benefit. Compared with the railway network, road transporters are better equipped to move agricultural and dairy produce to remote rural markets, they say. The AIMTC is also peeved that the Union Government, despite periodic assurances, has not thought of giving industry status to road transporters. The organisation claims that about 70 per cent of the estimated 40 lakh truck operators in the country are single truck owners. The truck companies provide employment directly to large numbers of drivers, cleaners, mechanics, body builders, loader, booking clerks and godown managers. Their livelihood will be affected if truck operators are forced to close down their businesses owing to high costs.
