Large crowd at bull race in Hangal

By Our Special Correspondent

HAVERI, MARCH 28. Enthusiasm marked the national-level bull obstacle race, a popular rural sport, in Hangal on Sunday as part of the Grama Devi jatra.

Around 300 bulls from the vicinity of Hangal and a few from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu took part in the race, as hundreds of spectators who thronged the Ramalingeshwar Tank Maidan watched the contest. This was the fifth time that the national-level competition was held in Hangal.

The bulls taking part in the race started arriving in Hangal early in the day. They took part in the race in the traditional regalia to the accompaniment of crackers, cymbals and drums.

What lent a touch of tension to the race was that around half a km down the track, around 100 enthusiasts tried to stop the speeding bulls.

Man killed

Forty-five-year old Basavaraj Bandigowdar died when he was attacked by a bull.

Mr. Bandigowdar was considered an expert in stopping bulls. But he sustained serious injuries and died on the way to the hospital.

A cash prize of Rs. 20,000 and ten grams of gold was given to Shivanagowda Karabasavanagowda of Haveri, whose bull won the race.

The bulls owned by Veeraiah Hiremath of Chikalingadahalli of Hirekerur taluk placed second and got a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 and ten grams of gold.

The third prize carrying a cash component of Rs. 5,000 and ten grams of gold went to the bull owned by Ravindra Chikkeri of Chikeri Hosalli village in Byadagi taluk.

The MLA and former Minister C.M. Udasi distributed the prizes. Jai Kisan Industries, Goa, sponsored the race.
