Suri produced in court, remanded

By Our Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR, MARCH 28. One of the four conspirators named in the FIR on Paritala Ravi murder, G. Suryanarayana Reddy alias Suri, who is now undergoing life imprisonment in the Jubilee Hills car bomb case of 1997, was produced in the makeshift AJFCM Court here today amid unprecedented security.

After arguments over the place for his judicial custody between counsel for the CBI, which is probing the case, and the defence lawyer the Special Judicial First Class Magistrate Court (Excise Court) Judge, A.V. Nelson Raj, ordered 14 days' judicial custody to Suri till April 11.

The Excise Court Judge was officiating as the AJFCM as the regular judge was on leave.

Briefing mediapersons, counsel for Suri, C. Adisesha Reddy, stated that CBI counsel Balan had pressed for lodging Suri in Cuddapah jail during the judicial custody due to security reasons. But, the defence argued that the State Government had utilised the services of about 2,000 policemen and officers for transporting Suri to Anantapur. The high security risk involved in moving Suri by road had forced the Government even to think of moving him in a helicopter. About 200 policemen were used for moving Suri from the Two Town police station to the court, the distance between the two stations hardly being about 50 metres, and Suri's transportation to Cuddapah, which was about 200 km away, was also risky, the defence had contended. Accordingly, the defence urged the court to lodge Suri in the district jail here itself.

Agreeing to the security concerns raised by the defence, the judge ordered the police to lodge Suri in the district jail at Reddypalli, near here.
