Farmers stage demonstration

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUCHI, MARCH 28. Members of various farmers' associations today staged a demonstration near the Collectorate here demanding adequate compensation for banana growers who had been badly affected by the gale that devastated banana plantations in several parts of the district recently.

Led by former MLA Y. Venkatesa Dikshithar, the demonstrators urged the State Government to take the necessary steps and disburse compensation to the affected farmers quickly. The farmers claimed that nearly 5,000 acres of banana plantations had been razed down due to the gale, which struck the Lalgudi, Mannachanallur, Andhanallur, Musiri, Thottiyam, Manikandam and Thiruverambur blocks.

A delegation of farmers submitted a memorandum to the Collector, V. Pandian, containing the demands.

Members of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam who were affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India, Bharatiya Kisan Sangh and farmers' associations affiliated to various political parties participated in the demonstration.
