BANGALORE, MARCH 28. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) will adopt stringent measures to enhance its revenue, the Mayor, R. Narayanaswamy, has said. He told presspersons after the budget presentation on Monday that the officials have been directed to survey all properties in the city and identify those who are evading tax.
Deadline
"The officials have been given a deadline of March 31 to submit a report certifying that the tax collected from the property owners is assessed on the exact built-up area," he said. The Commissioner, K. Jothiramalingam, said the officials may take a week more to submit the report. "After we have a database for revenue leakage, we will crack the whip and start collecting the correct tax from building owners," he said. The measures will bring in Rs. 320 crores this year, the Mayor said. Property tax adalats will be conducted to settle tax disputes. Steps will be taken to widen the tax base. Details of taxpayers will be compiled through the Geographical Information System. Preliminary surveys have been completed in more than 10 wards, and all wards will be covered this year. Over Rs. 1 crore has been earmarked for numbering houses. The Mayor said the civic body will take action to recover properties that have been leased to citizens/organisations in cases where the lease period is over. "We have over 2,600 different categories of properties and the lease terms of most of them have expired. Cases where lease conditions have been violated will be dealt with sternly," he said. All BMP properties will be fenced at a cost of Rs. 1 crore. The road widening project implemented using `transferable development rights' at a cost of Rs. 10 crores.
