Seven-year-old girl murdered

BANGALORE, MARCH 28. A seven-year-old girl was pushed into a well, allegedly by her mother's paramour, in MICO Layout police station limits on Sunday.

The girl's body was recovered from the well at a burial ground in Arakere on Monday afternoon. She was identified as Soumya, daughter of Ratnamma, a construction worker.

The police said Ratnamma, who deserted her husband, had an affair with Srinivas (25) of Hulimavu, a construction worker. Srinivas was upset that Ratnamma had affairs with two other men.

On Sunday, Srinivas came to Ratnamma's house and took Soumya with him. When he returned at night, Ratnamma questioned him about her daughter. He gave evasive replies and she lodged a complaint with the police on Monday morning.

On being questioned, Srinivas reportedly told the police that he had pushed the girl into the well and killed her. The MICO Layout police have arrested Srinivas.

Cheating charge

The Kempegowda Nagar police on Sunday arrested a former employee of the Indian Navy who allegedly cheated a woman by promising her a job in the Navy.

His name was given as Ramesh Prajapathi of Uttar Pradesh. He was a storekeeper in the Navy in Visakhapatnam and was discharged from service in 2004, the police said.

In a complaint to the police, K. Vyshali, an employee of a Kannada daily, said the accused approached her in December 2004 and introduced himself as a "commander" in the Navy. Claiming that he was an orphan, he proposed to marry her. He took money from Vyshali, promising her a job in the Navy.

The police said investigations had revealed that Prajapathi was married and had two children. He had allegedly taken Rs. 1.1 lakh from a few people here promising them jobs in the Navy, the police said. The police seized from him Rs. 50,000 in cash, gold ornaments, mobile phones, some fake documents and a Navy uniform.

Bodies found

Two bodies were found in two tanks in Subramanyapura police station limits on Sunday. They have not been identified.

The police said the body of a 15-year-old boy was found in a tank near ISKCON Bande and that of a 28-year-old man in a tank in Bhuvaneshwarinagar. The police suspect they drowned when they went for a swim.

The bodies have been kept at the Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary, the police said.
