BANGALORE, MARCH 28. Even as the second year pre-university annual examination got under way in 642 centres across the State on Monday, the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, R. Ramalinga Reddy, warned that criminal cases will be filed against anyone found encouraging examination malpractice. He also threatened to cancel centres where malpractice cases are frequently reported. Mr. Reddy inspected two examination centres here, Jyoti Nivas College and Reddy Janasangha College in Koramangala. The unannounced visit was part of the Education Department's measures to ensure smooth conduct of the examination. The Director of the Pre-University Education Department, D.N. Nayak, and Udayashankar, councillor, accompanied the Minister. Last year, malpractice cases were reported mainly from examination centres in Bijapur, Bagalkot, Gulbarga and Raichur districts. Mr. Reddy said a close watch is being kept on these centres this time. Besides, the Deputy Commissioners of these districts have been directed to help ensure that the examination is conducted smoothly. The Education Department has constituted 63 "flying squads" and 1,640 "sitting squads" to prevent copying and other cases of malpractice. In all, 4,72,335 students, including 2,73,876 boys, are appearing for the examinations. Among them, 1,17,606 are repeaters. The examinations will end on April 17. Despite the precautionary measures, 48 cases of malpractice were reported from different parts of the State on the first day of the examinations. All the 48 students caught by the squads were debarred, Mr. Nayak said. Examinations were held in Chemistry, Logic and Education Part-1 today. Of the malpractice cases, 24 were reported from Bidar, eight from Bijapur, four from Bangalore North, three from Bagalkot, two each from Bangalore South and Hassan and one each from Gulbarga, Mandya, Raichur, Shimoga and Haveri districts.
