CHENNAI, MARCH 29. Chennai prevailed over Bhopal by the odd goal in five to regain the title after a long gap in the State Bank inter-circle hockey tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Monday. Chennai had won the trophy in 1977 in New Delhi, beating the host. Dominating the exchanges almost throughout, Chennai led 2-1 at half-time. A penalty corner goal by Achuddin put the home team ahead in the ninth minute. Bhopal, however, levelled through Javed Habib. Before half-time, Chennai surged into the lead thanks to a splendid effort by Cedric D'Cruz. And late in the second half, Chennai struck again through D'Cruz. Though the host continued to hold the whiphand, Bhopal reduced the margin when Rafiq-ur-Rehman slotted home after a scrimmage. Abhijit Datta, Deputy Managing Director and CDO, State Bank of India Corporate Centre (Mumbai), gave away the prizes. Pradip Chaudhuri, Chief General Manager, SBI (Chennai Circle), presided over the function.
