Match Referee explains Inzamam's ban

LONDON, MARCH 29. One of the factors for imposing a one Test ban on Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq was his position of responsibility, ICC Match Referee at the Bangalore Test Chris Broad has said.

After Pakistan beat India in the Bangalore Test on Monday, the Match Referee banned Inzamam for one Test and fined 30 per cent of match fee after he was found guilty of two breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct.

``As captain he has to set an example for others,'' an ICC release quoted Broad as saying.

``Following the incident that happened in the ninth over of the innings, Inzamam was warned about appealing by the on-field umpires. In addition, I went to the Pakistan dressing room at lunch and requested the Pakistan coach to pass a message on to his team about the manner of their appealing. This means that when this second incident happened he knew he should not have reacted as he did,'' he added.

Broad found Inzamam in breach of Level 1.3 and Level 2.6 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

The Level 1.3 breach relates to showing `dissent at an umpire's decision by action or verbal abuse' and occurred in the ninth over of India's second innings.

The Level 2.6 breach concerned `charging or advancing towards the umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing'.

This charge was brought by the match officials after an incident in the 90th over of India's second innings and Inzamam was banned for one Test match after pleading guilty to the offence. — UNI
