WASHINGTON, MARCH 29. Mindful of the criticism it faced in the aftermath of the December 26 tsunami tragedy, the U.S. has promised quick action to the victims of the Indonesia earthquake. "We are applying what we've learnt from the previous earthquake so that we can be prepared to be responsive quickly and in a meaningful way," said the State Department. "Where we are right now is having alerted all our posts...putting ourselves in battle mode to be in a position where we can know what's going on and act appropriately if and when it's necessary." Last December, the U.S. was taken to task for being slow in its response to the tsunami tragedy. The U.S. and the Western nations were criticised for being "stingy." Several agencies of the Government have now swung into action as the news broke. The U.S. Geological Survey first placed the magnitude of the tremor at 8.2 but revised it to 8.7. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it did not have tide guages in the Indian Ocean and did not know weather a wave had been generated but nevertheless warned that the quake "has the potential" to set off a tsunami. The National Geospatial Intelligence Agency which analyses satellite imagery sent out warning notices to ships but the Pentagon maintained that American operations and personnel were not affected.
