Need to start community colleges: VC

By Our Staff Reporter

TIRUVARUR, MARCH 29 . C.Thangamuthu, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, said that there was a need to start community colleges all over the country.

Delivering convocation address at Nethaji Subhash Chandra Bose College here recently, he said that only seven per cent of students, who enrol in schools, complete college education. Community colleges are meant for these dropouts. There would be no age restriction to get admission into community colleges.

The recently started Entrepreneur Career Development Cell at Tiruchi Khajamalai could be called as a community college.

Mr. Thangamuthu said that education in India focussed on bookish knowledge. Students mug up everything, regurgitate in the examination hall and get first class marks. This should change. "In no way, it helps anybody to develop his knowledge or wisdom.''

India could become a super power in 20 years as dreamt by the President A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, provided the youth were ready for it. In view of globalisation, there would be a plenty of job opportunities in about 10 years when caste or nepotism could hardly help the youth. "If they want to use these opportunities, they should be well equipped in communication skill in English and computer operation skill apart from developing their allround personality," Mr. Thangamuthu said.

S. Venkatrajulu, Chairman of the college, presided. M. Arunachalam, Head, Department of Tamil, welcomed the gathering. V. Janakiraman, Principal, presented a report on the academic achievement of students.
