Removal of encroachments

Removal of encroachments

Sir, — Efforts of the municipality in removing encroachments in Thanjavur during the past two months deserve praise. But the Highways Department has been inactive.

Highway roads are government land, classified as road poromboke. So, when the department concerned fails to safeguard its property, the Revenue Department should step in, remove encroachments, collect the expenditure from the Department of Highways and take stringent action against erring officials for dereliction of duty.

R.J.B. Frederick,

Thanjavur.

Inadequate bus service

Sir, — Valangaiman is located about 10 km from Kumbakonam.

Only four town buses are operated between Kumbakonam and places near Valangaiman.

Two buses, No. 20 and 21, ply on special routes while two others, No. 32 and 67, ply on main routes.

The aged, office-goers, school and college students and women face so many problems daily to get buses to go to Kumbakonam. Another town bus, which has been changed as mofussil bus, was shifted to Kumbakonam and Mayiladuturai route.

Instead of increasing the number of buses to meet the requirement of more and more commuters, the authorities decrease the number of buses.

So, the commuters have to wait for more than half an hour to get a Kumbakonam bus from Valangaiman. May the TNSTC, Kumbakonam division, take action to increase the number of buses between Valangaiman and Kumbakonam.

R.Velmurugan,

Valangaiman.

Woes of farmers

Sir, — The Agriculture Department has set up offices in every taluk for the benefit of farmers to teach them new farming techniques and provide all kinds of seeds and equipment at subsidised rate.

One such office exists at Vriddhachalam taluk but it never meets the needs of farmers. Whenever any farmer approaches the office, he can get neither seeds nor equipment.

Farmers' grievance day meetings are not held periodically as claimed by officials.

S.L.Narayanan,

Ko. Puvanur.

A good service

Sir, — The Thatkal system (quick distribution of certificates), introduced by Bharathidasan University, is flawless and well organised. The fee of Rs. 300 collected for this service is quite reasonable.

It has helped many local and outstation students to get certificates in time.

David Peniel,

Tiruchi.

Thanjavur.
