MADIKERI, MARCH 29. The Joint Action Committee of landholders, fighting for tree rights in Kodagu, has decided to end its agitation of blocking timber auctions in government depots in the interest of farmers, the committee president, Jammada A. Karumbaiah, said here on Tuesday. Mr. Karumbaiah told presspersons that the committee had taken this decision as the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, had assured the landholders of finding a solution to the problem. The landholders had prevented timber auctions in Government depots since last year demanding rights over trees grown on their land. Monsoon can destroy timber deposited at the Thithimathi timber depot, resulting in losses to farmers, Mr. Karumbaiah said. The landholders were to meet Mr. Dharam Singh recently but because could not do so for various reasons. The delegation will meet the Chief Minister soon, Mr. Karumbaiah said. He criticised the environmentalists who cried hoarse over the demand of landholders. Landholders are demanding tree rights to fell trees on their own land, subject to conditions, he said. Farmers had deposited timber only at Thithimathi depot in Virajpet taluk. But why are environmentalists not questioning the Forest Department which has stacked timber in other government depots in Kodagu, Mr. Karumbaiah asked.
