Free cycles for girl students

By Our Special Correspondent

CUDDALORE, MARCH 29. The Education Minister, C.Ve. Shanmugham, gave away 10,800 free cycles to Plus-One and Plus-Two girl students at a function in Annagramam, Panruti block near here on Sunday.

The Minister said the cycles worth Rs 2 crores were given to girl students, including those belonging to the Adi Dravida, backward and most backward communities and Scheduled Tribes to enable them to commute to the schools.

Mr Shanmugham said that as per the direction of the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, free textbooks would be given up to 10th standard. The Chief Minister had also launched a scheme in which Rs 50,000 would be deposited in the fixed account of the girl students who had lost the breadwinner of the family or where the breadwinner had become permanently incapacitated.

The interest accruing from the money would be utilised for education. Mr Shanmugham noted that Tamil Nadu had set a example by elevating 40,000 anganwadis as nursery schools to improve the English language skills of children.

The Cuddalore Collector, Gagandeep Singh Bedi, said the cycles were given as incentives to the girl students to enthuse them to do well in their studies.
