PONDICHERRY, MARCH 29. The former Education Minister, K. Lakshminarayanan, today objected to the views of the Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, on the Value Added Tax (VAT). As soon as the question hour was over, Mr. Lakshminarayanan referred to newspaper reports today quoting the Chief Minster as saying that he would consult the Centre on the issue before taking any decision. There is a consensus that VAT should not be implemented here, as it would affect merchants and traders. Also, there was no reference to the VAT in Mr. Rangasamy's budget speech in the House on March 28. Under these circumstances his statement has created confusion, Mr. Lakshminarayanan said and wondered how the Chief Minister could make such a view outside the House.
