PONDICHERRY MARCH 29. Members cutting across party lines demanded during zero hour in the Assembly today that the Administration appoint candidates holding diplomas as nursing staff in government hospitals on the basis of seniority. Raising the issue, A. Anbalagan (AIADMK) said that around 175 candidates from the Government-run School of Nursing had been on fast for nearly two weeks, seeking appointment as staff nurses in government hospitals. If merit alone was the criterion for appointment, it would cause hardship to the candidates as valuation varied between one examination and another. The candidates were unemployed for nearly a decade. Hence they should be relieved of their agony immediately and posted on the basis of seniority in completion of the course. S.P. Sivakumar (DMK) said the Speaker, M.D.R. Ramachandran had during his tenure in the past as Chief Minster introduced the seniority criterion for posting and this facilitated appointments without hiccups. The system should be revived, he said. R. Siva (DMK) said that there were around 250 vacancies for the post of nurses in hospitals. Hence the candidates could be appointed without delay. K. Lakshminarayanan (Congress), former Education Minister, said that seniority criterion would always be helpful. The government could treat these candidates as waitlisted applicants. He said one batch of candidates could not be equalised with those of from the previous batch on the basis of marks because the nature of the question paper and valuation method varied. Speaker intervening the members recalled how he had introduced seniority criterion. Any different approach would only cause mental agony to unemployed candidates and would dislocate their life. The Chief Minister, Rangasamy, said he would consult the Minister concerned and take a decision.
