PONDICHERRY, MARCH 29. The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying attached to the Union Agriculture Ministry has approved the Rs 4-crore project of the Pondicherry Veterinary College Society for `improvement of cattle and buffalo breeding in the Union Territory.' The Agriculture Minister, A. Namassivayam, said here today the society had been identified by the Union Ministry to function as State Implementing Agency for the scheme, a centrally sponsored National Project for Cattle and Buffalo Breeding to be implemented over five years. The project would be launched at a function here tomorrow by the Pondicherry Assembly Speaker, M. D. R. Ramachandran. The highlights of the project are among other things the grant of cent percent aid to the implementing agency, which would arrange for delivery of artificial insemination service at farmers' doorsteps. The project would also progressively bring all the breedable females among cattle and buffaloes under organised breeding through `Artificial Insemination or Natural Services' using high quality bulls, Mr. Namassivayam added. The project would be implemented in collaboration with the Pondicherry Cooperative Milk Producers Union Limited and the Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal Welfare here, the Minister said.
