National meet of AIDS Society of India

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, MARCH 29. The first national conference of AIDS Society of India, a society of medical practitioners, will be held in New Delhi from April 2 to 4. About 600 delegates, including 40 international faculties, are expected to participate.

About 100 papers will be presented at the scientific session in the three-day conference, which includes sessions in epidemiology, history of the disease, pathogenesis and behavioural and social challenges posed by the disease.

Suniti Solomon, president of the AIDS Society of India, said three sessions would be devoted to anti-retroviral therapy. The meet would also focus on vaccines and newer drugs and the response of Indian industries to AIDS.

On April 4, a session on science, health, media and policymaking would be attended by senior officials from Indian Council of Medical Research, National AIDS Control Organisation and UNAIDS, Bangkok.

Two founders of the society — Dr. Solomon, Director of Y.R. Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education, Chennai, and Ishwar S. Gilada of Mumbai-based Unison Medicare and Research Centre — would be the co-chairs.

The Ministries of Health and Family Welfare, Youth Affairs and Sports, NACO, ICMR, YRG Care and People Health Organisation are co-sponsoring the conference.
