TUTICORIN, MARCH 29. The situation was normal in the town today, after yet another threat of tsunami loomed large on Monday night, following an earthquake in the Indonesian archipelago. Those who had been vacated by the police from the tsunami-prone areas in the district on Monday night and the wee hours today returned to their homes. Unlike on the last occasion, when a tsunami-rumour which spread a week after the December-26 disaster made the people flee in large numbers to nearby places such as Tirunelveli and Madurai for safety, there was not much panic this time. A senior revenue official told The Hindu that people might have learned a lesson or two from the pervious incident, when they believed some hearsay and fled from the coastal areas. Meanwhile, the revenue administration and police monitored the situation closely even today as they did not want to take any `chances.' The Revenue Divisional Officer, Suresh Kumar, said all officers cutting across ranks were asked to be present at the respective places of their posting till further orders. The police too patrolled the coastal areas to ensure tranquility and instil confidence among people.
Phone calls
Media offices were flooded with calls on Monday night from people ranging from common man, forest officials and lecturers to engineers, to know at what time the tsunami will strike. This despite prominent TV channels asking the people not to panic. Most of the journalists were eventually forced to switch off their cell phones.
