Widen road

Widen road

Sir, — The Meelavittan Road in Tuticorin is narrow and causes inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians. As export companies are located along this stretch, container lorries too frequent this road. Authorities concerned must do the needful to repair this road soon.

P. Senthil Saravana Durai,

Vazhavallan.

Sale of water

Sir, — While the whole of Tuticorin is reeling under acute water crisis, it is infuriating to learn that some who have taken the public toilets on lease from the municipality are selling drinking water from the public convenience at Re.1 a pot. It is surprising how they manage to get uninterrupted supply of drinking water on all days round the clock while the rest of the people, the tax payers, are supplied water once in three days, for a few hours.

Will the Collector, who advises people to judiciously use drinking water, put an end to this practice?

M. Murugan,

Tuticorin.

They suffer too

Sir, — It is said that about 358 temples were demolished during the encroachment eviction drive by the Madurai Corporation. It has resulted in as many `archakas' earning their livelihood by performing pujas in those temples being rendered jobless.

Likewise, the tsunami played havoc with people living on the coast. Rehabilitation measures are being taken for those directly affected by the disaster. But thousands of street vendors selling fish are out of job as people are still averse to buying sea fish.

The `invisible damage' is equally disastrous. The Government must take rehabilitation measures for these people too.

P.M. Vijayan,

Madurai.

Date of birth

Sir, — The apex court has ruled that date of birth entered in one's horoscope should not be taken as proof for determining age ( The Hindu , March 16).

However, the Life Insurance Corporation of India continues to treat date of birth as found in horoscope as valid. Since there is scope for manipulation of one's horoscope, policies based on them could have, in the past, led to and in the present, can lead to fake claims.

The LIC authorities may take note of this and fall in line with the court ruling.

V. Krishnamoorthy,

Madurai.

IT hub

Sir, — Kudos to efforts taken by the MADITISIA and CII in making the Temple City an IT hub, besides industrialising the southern districts ( The Hindu , March 26). The government must also chip in with its efforts by expediting pending projects such as laying four-lane highways, expansion and modernisation of Madurai Airport and Tuticorin Port, Sethu Samudram project etc. All political parties should work in unison to achieve this goal.

C.R. Kumaran,

Madurai.

Surcharge

Sir, — The Railway is collecting surcharge on fares of express trains whose speed have been increased a wee bit but termed as `super-fast.' In fact, by increasing the speed of these trains, the Railway is more benefited than passengers, by way of saving on fuel due to fewer stoppages and man-hours of running staff, and thus less wage.

Hence, the Railway authorities should withdraw the so-called surcharge.

K.R. Rajendran,

Madurai.

Vazhavallan.
