NEW DELHI, MARCH 29. The Union Cabinet today cleared a proposal to reintroduce a Bill to amend the Factories Act to allow women work in late night shifts in certain industries. Announcing the decision, the Union Minister, Jaipal Reddy, said the Bill would provide for adequate safeguards to protect the dignity, honour and safety of women workers and provide for maintaining equal opportunity and occupational safety and health for them. The employers would have to provide proper transportation facility between the factory premises and the workers' residence. According to the Bill, the State Governments would issue orders notifying the industries where late night shifts could be allowed after due consultation with representative organisations of the employers and the employees. Where there was no such organisation, the consultation would be done with individual employers and employees.
Asian Games
Chaired by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the Cabinet gave the nod to the Indian Olympic Association to bid for holding the 2014 Asian Games in Delhi using the infrastructure being created for the 2010 Commonwealth games, and decided to introduce the Value Added Tax system in Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli through an Ordinance. Besides, the Cabinet decided to introduce a Bill to convert the Manipur University along with the College of Technology at Imphal into a Central University to help remove imbalances in educational facilities in the North-east. It also approved signing of agreements for cooperation in the field of science and technology with Serbia and Montenegro.
